Jared had to do a lot of convincing to persuade me to go to our first Comic Con. I didn’t see the point in spending hundreds of dollars to see a bunch of geeks in costume. But as soon as I stepped into my first Comic Con at the Dallas Convention Center, I realized all my preconceptions were wrong. All sorts of people were excited to be there, and when I mean all sorts, I really mean all sorts. We saw children, couples, teens and families all dressed up and in love with Comic Con.
I also hadn’t realized how much Comic Con encompassed. The Comic Con booths sell all types of items from memorable comics, tv shows, manga, video games and movies like Star Wars, “Mass Effect,” “Walking Dead,” “Stranger Things,” every super hero you could imagine, Harry Potter, “Avatar the Last Airbender,” “My Hero Academia,” Walt Disney movies and Studio Ghibli (Did I name enough?). Jared and I love seeing all the artwork of movie characters and superheroes. Other booths sell souvenirs such as laptop stickers, t-shirts, key chains, toys, etc.
But our favorite thing about Comic Con is the moments we’ve been able to experience. Like when a little boy went up to an adult dressed as Flash and asked for his autograph, or when a life-like R2D2 ran up to me and started doing his happy, excited dance because I was wearing an R2D2 dress.
Whatever, you’re into, you’re sure to find something to love at Comic Con and it’s definitely worth the money.
Jared and I have gone to many other Comic Cons since our first and are sure to attend many more. Here are some tips we thought worth mentioning:
#1 Prior to the event, make sure you fully understand the Comic Con’s rules.
We recommend buying tickets in advance. Be sure to read the online rules and regulations thoroughly beforehand. If you want to attend a certain show or meet a celebrity, check to see if you need to buy an extra ticket. One of Jared’s main reasons for wanting to go to the Dallas Comic Con was to see Jason David Frank. However, we didn’t fully understand the photo-op ticketing process until the tickets were sold out. Also keep in mind that most Comic Cons have thorough rules for what you can wear and bring.
#2 Pick your arrival time wisely.
If you’re not into crowds, go early. If you enjoy interacting with people and seeing extravagant costumes, go later in the afternoon.
#3 Bring cash.
Some merchandise booths only take cash.
#4 Come and go as you please.
Check with staff to confirm, but every Comic Con we’ve gone to allows guests to leave the convention and come back later that day. At the Dallas Comic Con, Jared and I walked to a restaurant nearby and then walked back to the event after we satisfied our hunger. We didn’t have to wait for our food or eat on the floor. Plus, we got to explore some of Dallas.
#4 Dress up!
You don’t have to spend a ton of money or go all out for your costume. I bought an R2D2 dress for $14 for my first Comic Con.
