Lake Motosu, known as Motosuko in Japanese, is the place to be during Japan’s hot summer months. One of Mount Fuji’s five lakes, this clear water, deep-blue lake offers breathtaking views of Japan’s largest mountain on clear days.
Daytrip to Lake Motosu
Our first visit to this postcard-worthy lake was a quick pit stop, as there’s a side road off the highway for sightseeing visitors. Our second visit to Motosu was for a paddleboard trip. Kayaking is also popular at Motosu. Don’t own a paddleboard or kayak? Rent one from Koan Campsite! They also offer windsurf boards and slacklines for rent and scuba diving excursions. If you don’t go in the summer months, be prepared for cold waters. The water doesn’t warm until after rainy season around late June or July. We went in early June and the water was still freezing, but that didn’t stop us from jumping in!
Spend the Night at Lake Motosu
But our absolute favorite thing to do at Motosu, is camp and stay the night along the lake’s shoreline, because there’s nothing like waking up to a stunning view of Mount Fuji. Every time we camp at Koan Campsite in the summer, we relax in the refreshing waters the entire trip.
If you’re considering camping in the summer, make a reservation the day prior by phone or get there early. The campsite spots fill up fast! Upon arrival, check in and pay at the main building. They’ll give you an information pamphlet and direct you to the campsite area. There are restrooms and showers as well as a kitchen cleaning area located just off the shoreline. Koan offers campsites in the woods or on the lakeshore. As you can imagine, the shore is more sought after than the woods. If roughing it isn’t your thing, they also offer cabins for rent. For more information, visit their official website.
