Oahu, Hawaii

Oahu Hawaii is one of my favorite vacation destinations to date. It’s the perfect getaway for snorkeling, hiking and travel enthusiasts as there’s plenty to do all within a short drive’s distance.

Snorkeling

Shark’s Cove

Swim within the cove’s protected, shallow area and explore the reef, or swim out of the cove for the chance to spot sea turtles. But be careful, the current outside of the cove can get strong, and getting into the water is tricky as the shore entrance is rocky.

Kahe Point Beach Park (Electric Beach)

Electric Beach is likely a bit of a drive from your hotel but definitely worth a visit. The electric power plant across the street may be an eyesore but it’s what makes the ideal snorkeling conditions. It jets out warm water into the ocean creating ideal water temperatures for marine life.

Although the sandy shore provides for easy access, you’ll have to swim a ways to get to the most scenic snorkeling spots. Follow the pipe all the way to its end or stay closer to the shore and see a few colorful and interesting fish. We even swam with a sea turtle during our excursion. This beach is recommended for intermediate to experienced snorkelers, and beware of the pipe openings—swim in front of them and you’re likely to get pushed and spun out to sea.

Hanuma Bay

Although Jared and I didn’t get a chance to visit Hanuma Bay, I added it to the list because it’s a great option for beginners and is one of the most popular destinations for snorkel-goers due to its alluring and diverse marine population. For more information, including their visitor hours, visit Hanuma Bay’s official website.

Hiking

Hiking on Oahu is like hiking the jungles of Jurassic Park with cityscape and beach views. But do your research before picking your trek, many of the hikes—such as Stairway to Heaven—are actually illegal and can cost you a lot of money.

Diamond Head

One of Hawaii’s most recognizable landmarks, Diamond Head crater was created from a volcanic eruption that occurred 300,000 years ago sending ash and fine particles into the air that settled and solidified into the crater it is today. Hike up Diamond Head for scenic views of the blue ocean below. The hike requires a lot of climbing stairs but is beginner-friendly due to its short length. To reserve a hiking time, click here.

Lanikai Pillbox Hike

This was my favorite hike on Oahu with beautiful views of the ocean to the left and jungle views on the right. The hike gets its name thanks to the two lookout stations built during World War II. The trail entrance can be tricky to find as it’s wedged between two private properties and the only marker is a cardboard sign. It’s just past a gated golf course. Get there early as there is no official parking, just legal parking on the side of people’s front yards, and the spots fill up fast.

Honolulu

If you prefer cities and shopping over small towns and nature, Honolulu is the place to be with plenty to do and see. Shop ’til you drop at the Ala Moana Center and International Market Place open-air malls or spend your vacation days on the beach. Even better, stay at one of the hotels that line the beachfront.
