Seoul, South Korea

When my sister and I first decided to visit Seoul, I went into the trip with low expectations, but Seoul may just be my favorite city EVER. The people are spirited and proud yet kind, the food is amazing and the city is beautiful and English friendly. Seoul is also cheap compared to most cities, and public transportation is easy to use and accessible. We only spent four days in Seoul, but you could certainly spend a whole week there. I personally wasn’t ready to leave when we did. Here’s just some of the worthwhile things to do during your stay in Seoul.

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Gyeongbokgung is the first and largest palace built during the Joseon Dynasty. Enter the North Gate to see the traditionally-dressed soldiers stand guard. Walk through the massive entrance into the main courtyard for breathtaking views of the palace as the mountains proudly stand as a backdrop.

National Folk Museum of Korea

I learned so much about Korean culture and history at this fascinating museum! The museum features tons of artifacts with exhibit labels written in English. It’s also located right next to the Gyeongbokgung Palace, so if you visit the palace, there’s no reason not to visit the museum as well.

Bukchon Hanok Village

Get a taste of Korea’s traditional architecture and way of life during the Joseon Dynasty at this village. Take a leisurely stroll through winding, quiet alleyways to view the meticulously well-maintained historical homes. Walk into some of the homes to see the houses’ interior. Some of the buildings offer displays of artifacts and information while others sell souvenirs and crafting classes.

Changdeokgung

Just blocks from Bukchon Hanok Village is Changdeokgung palace. Step back in time as you explore the massive grounds and don’t miss the peaceful garden and quaint visitor’s center.

Itaewon

With the help of a former U.S. military base, Itaewon grew famous for its international cuisine and visitors. Meander through3 the narrow busy streets, and it won’t be long before you find the perfect Korean barbecue restaurant or trendy bar.

Starfield COEX Mall

For something a little more western, visit Asia’s largest underground mall. They offer plenty of brand-name stores as well as some off-the-grid fashion companies. This extensive mall even holds an aquarium and library with 12-meter-tall bookshelves.
