Bratislava, Slovakia

Bratislava is a bit of a hidden gem in that it’s not on many people’s radars, but this capital city of Slovakia has much to offer tourists with its attractions and sights. It’s the perfect weekend trip or a great addition to any European tour.

Day One

Check in to the modern yet reasonably priced AC Hotel Bratislava Old Town. It’s got friendly staff; a modern, clean vibe; and stellar location.

After dropping off your bags, simply step outside the hotel to explore downtown Bratislava. Walk just a few minutes through maze-like, cobblestone alleyways to reach Kaffe Mayer: a local cafe offering handmade pastries and coffee. Its just one of many charming restaurants and stores that encircle a pedestrian-only plaza complete with an attention-grabbing water fountain. I fully embraced being part of the daily congregation that fills the plaza whilst watching kids ride on scooters; couples dine outdoors; and tourists, like us, absorbing the warm, bustling atmosphere with a sense of awe. It’s a communal environment I certainly have never experienced in the States.

Downtown Bratislava also offers visitors an overwhelming amount of noteworthy restaurants, historic churches, and shopping stores worth perusing through.

Day Two

Wake up early and eat breakfast at either the hotel’s buffet or try the spot right next door, Cafe Dias.

Drive or take public transit to one of Bratislava’s top destinations: Devin Castle. Built on top a cliff with the Danube River weaving alongside it, Devin Castle is like something out of “Game of Thrones.” We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the impressive castle grounds and taking in the Danube from the castle’s high heights.

There’s also a questionably small petting zoo, restaurant, some food vendors and a kids park that would most certainly be condemned in the States. Still, the park was a convenient place to take the kids while Jared waited in line to get the entrance tickets for the castle.

Complete the trip with a lovely stroll along the Danube. Biking is also popular as the miles-long path is paved and wide.

Day Three

Shop ’til you drop at Bratislava’s premium Eurovea mall. This massive, modern mall includes plenty of shops and restaurants plus an arcade and kids indoor amusement center. Be sure to check the mall’s hours prior to your trip, as they’re closed on Slovakian holidays.
