When travelers consider a trip to Germany, their plans usually revolve around its big cities, but Germany’s largest state has plenty to offer as well with charming villages scattered amongst idyllic forest landscapes. Here’s five reasons you should plan a trip to Bavaria, Germany.
#1 Bavaria is like stepping into a fairyland. With its teeming deciduous forests, cascading waterfalls and scenic mountaintops, Bavaria is a sight to behold.

#2 Bavaria is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts. No matter what time of year, Bavaria offers plenty of outdoor activities. Take a trek through the woods in the summer and spring months, or ski and snowboard its mountains in the winter. Visit natural sights like Zugspitze glacier. Even just walking through Bavaria’s towns can feel like a delightful walk through nature as many offer forested trails located just off of its main sidewalks. Simply follow the pedestrian only signs and see where they take you.
#3 Bavaria has attractions for the less outdoorsy types too. Take a trip to Bavaria’s historic Eagle’s Nest, and explore enchanting castles like Neuschwanstein. Bavaria also offers local brewery tours for beer lovers.
#4 You can visit cities like Munich and Nuremberg. We have admittedly not yet visited the Bavarian cities, but we’ve heard they’re wonderful, and they should give you the city fix you crave.
#5 Bavaria is rich with culture. As the oldest and most religious province in Germany, Bavaria is full of cultural traditions. Of course, Oktoberfests take place every October, but one of Bavaria’s most unique traditions, the Passion Play, is hosted in the small town of Oberammergau. It’s admittedly hard to witness seeing as the play only takes place every decade, but the small town has plenty of other cultural events and sights to offer. Our family stumbled upon a town marching band during our visit. Plus, Oberammergau’s plentiful boutiques sell their acclaimed, handmade nativity scenes and other Christmas decorations thorough out the year.
